Transport & Environment (T&E) has presented a joint letter, calling on EU transport ministers to implement toll exemptions.

The letter states that the purpose of this is to accelerate clean freight, with logistics operators and NGOs, including DHL, Volvo, ALDI and TRATON, asking for the quick implementation of the Eurovignette Directive.

While trucks represent only 2% of vehicles on the road, they contribute roughly 25% of transport emissions. Removing toll costs is an effective lever to bridge the price gap between diesel and electric fleets, the letter states.

It goes on to say: ‘Against this backdrop, the recent extension of Member States’ power to exempt ZETs from road tolls and user charges until 30 June 2031 represents a critical opportunity. Implementing this measure, alongside CO₂-based truck tolling, is vital to reduce operating costs and enable European companies to deploy ZETs at scale.’

The letter goes on to state that proactive government action in all EU countries, including those where concessionary agreements are in place, is essential to reinforce Europe’s climate and industrial goals.
